Death and the Displacement of Beauty
About this Item: Indiana University Press. Condition: new. Seller Inventory think She shares with her readers the deepest and most intimate experiences of her life through her writings. This detailed study of Julian attempts not only to penetrate her theological ideas but also brings to life her world and her life as an anchoress. Grac Julian of Norwich, an anchoress of the fourteenth century, has captured the imagination of our time in a remarkable way.
Grace Jantzen has more than an academic interest in Julian's writings and sets out to integrate scholarly findings with contemporary spirituality. There is much in the thought of this extraordinary woman mystic which is excitingly relevant; her insights into spiritual growth and wholeness foreshadow the modern interest in psychotherapy and her image of Christ as mother has resounding implications for Christian feminist theology.
In a new introduction to this edition, the author explores what it might mean to be an anchoress in post modernity, and how reflections on Julian of Norwich and her desire for God can enable us to become the space of divine transformation. This is a book not only for those who have a scholarly interest in Julian, but also for anyone drawn to Christian mysticism and the place of women within that tradition. Get A Copy. Apr 11, Heidi rated it it was amazing Shelves: religion , non-fiction. April 16, - It's going to take me a while to finish this book, because at the end of chapters I keep wanting to go back and re-read. Not because I haven't understood, but because I feel that there is so much in each chapter that I haven't yet appreciated - as though there is only so much you can get on a particular read-through.
The most recent chapter I read, "Love Was His Meaning" is particularly like this, especially the passages on Julian struggling with Church teaching vs experience. May April 16, - It's going to take me a while to finish this book, because at the end of chapters I keep wanting to go back and re-read. May 1, - I feel like I've rushed through the last two chapters in an effort to finish the book I got distracted by "trashy historical fiction" - namely Innocent Traitor.
But there is some amazing stuff in there.

It's hard to write objectively about the book because so much of what I've read has gone so very deep. Jantzen's interpretation of Julian I have the Showings to read myself now, but all of my comments are based on what Jantzen says Julian says is so very focused on God's love - God's steadfast love, as the NRSV translation of the Psalms keeps saying.
This book has been so very comforting and thought provoking. Once I finish reading the Showings, if I haven't found myself a copy of my own, I'll borrow it again for another thorough and hopefully a little more contemplative read. And I need to get my own copy.

Jun 29, Sara rated it really liked it Shelves: study-of-religion. A much easier, quicker read than some of Jantzen's other works, but still full of profundity. Her reflections on what anchoritism, and even mysticism, mean in a postmodern world are quite brilliant. I think she develops these ideas further in her later books, but this is an incredible base to bette understand both the meditations of Julian of Norwich and the philosophy of Grace Jantzen.
Aug 04, Kenny rated it it was amazing. I recommend this book highly as a resource to read alongside of Julian's Showings, or Revelations of Divine Love. It gives a very helpful overview of the historical and cultural context of Julian's life, and an excellent framework for understanding her rich theology and spirituality. The author gives numerous references to Julian's writing, explaining and connecting her writing as well as the relationship between the Short and Long Texts.
